Server rooms, network closets & small data centers

How much cooling does your server room need?

Enter your IT load, UPS and room details. RackChill adds up every heat source, converts the total to BTU/h and tons, recommends how many cooling units to install with redundancy, and estimates the yearly cooling cost.

    Every watt becomes heat

Servers, storage and network switches convert almost all the electricity they draw into heat. A rack drawing 4 kW is effectively a 4 kW heater running 24 hours a day. The cooling system must remove that heat plus the losses from UPS systems, lighting, people and heat that enters through walls and windows. RackChill adds these up and converts the total to the units cooling equipment is sold in.

    BTU/h = total kW × 3,412 · Tons = BTU/h ÷ 12,000

    Typical loads

    SpaceIT loadCooling
    Network closet (1 rack, switches)0.5 – 1.5 kW2,000 – 5,500 BTU/h
    Small server room (2 – 4 racks)6 – 16 kW2 – 5 tons
    Medium room (10 racks at 5 kW)50 kW≈ 15 tons
    High-density rack (AI/GPU)20 – 50 kW per rackLiquid or in-row cooling

    Measuring the IT load

Power supply nameplate ratings overstate real consumption. Use measured values from metered PDUs, UPS displays or server management tools, and add room for growth over the next three to five years. Cooling equipment is long-lived, so planning for future density avoids expensive retrofits.

    Redundancy

    Choosing cooling equipment

    Efficiency and PUE

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) compares total facility power with IT power. Small server rooms with comfort-style cooling often reach 1.6 – 2.0; well-designed rooms with containment and economizers 1.3 or better. Raising inlet temperatures within ASHRAE's recommended range and sealing gaps are the cheapest efficiency gains.

    Frequently asked questions

How many BTU do I need to cool a server room?

Multiply the total heat load in kW by 3,412. A room with 10 kW of IT equipment plus losses needs about 36,000 – 40,000 BTU/h (3 – 3.5 tons).

What temperature should a server room be?

    ASHRAE recommends 18 – 27 °C (64 – 81 °F) at server inlets, with controlled humidity.

Can I use a regular air conditioner for a server room?

Comfort units aren't built for 24/7 operation or low outdoor temperatures. Use a mini-split or precision unit rated for server rooms.

    What does N+1 cooling mean?

One more cooling unit than the load requires, so the room stays cool if any single unit fails.

How do I measure server heat output?

Use measured power from PDUs or the UPS; nearly all electrical power becomes heat.

    About RackChill

RackChill is an independent, free calculator for estimating cooling loads in server rooms, network closets and small data centers. Results are planning estimates; have a mechanical engineer or HVAC contractor verify critical installations. We are not affiliated with any equipment vendor.

Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.

The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
